Eagles Soar Past Gargoyles in Round 2 Victory
The Toronto Eagles put together a complete team performance on Saturday, defeating the Grand River Gargoyles 10.11 (71) to 0.0 (6) in Round 2 of the AFL Ontario season.
Travelling with just 16 players, the Eagles faced the challenge of playing the entire match with limited rotations, but the group responded brilliantly. Every player contributed across four quarters as Toronto controlled the contest for long periods and secured an impressive 65-point victory on the road.
The result was particularly encouraging given how early the season remains. With several players still learning each other’s tendencies and new faces continuing to settle into the side, the Eagles showed plenty of signs that this group is beginning to build something special.
After a competitive opening quarter, Toronto gradually tightened its grip on the match and never looked back, finishing strongly to record its first win of the 2026 campaign.
Key Players and Highlights
The Eagles’ forward mix was a major positive, with Jake Maher, Kevin Minaker, and Aaron Falcioni combining well throughout the day.
Maher was outstanding and could easily have finished with an even bigger afternoon had a few opportunities gone his way in front of goal. His work rate, marking presence, and ability to create scoring chances made him one of the most influential players on the ground.
Minaker once again showed why he remains one of the club’s most reliable performers. Whether winning contests, creating opportunities, or applying pressure around the ball, he consistently found ways to impact the game.
Falcioni provided an early highlight, kicking the Eagles’ first goal of the afternoon. Still working his way back to full confidence after his wrist injury, the veteran looked increasingly comfortable as the game progressed and provided plenty of leadership inside the forward 50.
In the midfield, Sean Fahey, Christian Barsic, Xavier Karagiannis, and newcomer Zane Illich formed a strong combination. Illich, making his Eagles debut after recently arriving from Perth, immediately made his presence felt and earned the team’s Gas Can Award for his tireless running and effort.
Fahey and Barsic were exceptional throughout the day, winning contests around the ball and helping the Eagles dominate possession for large periods of the match.
Down back, the Eagles defence adopted a bend-but-don’t-break mentality. Bradley Harding, Ben Fox, Luis González, Sean Kennedy, and Gary Conlon absorbed repeated pressure at times but remained composed, limiting Grand River’s scoring opportunities and providing a solid platform for the team to attack from.
A special moment also belonged to Aron Welis, who celebrated by kicking his first goal for the Toronto Eagles.
Game Flow
The Eagles started strongly and were rewarded early as Aaron Falcioni slotted the opening goal of the game. The fast start helped settle the visitors and establish momentum, with Toronto generating multiple scoring opportunities throughout the opening quarter.
“We wanted to start with energy and put pressure on them early,” said Falcioni after the match. “Getting the first goal was nice, but it was really about getting the group going.”
The second quarter was perhaps the most frustrating period of the day. Playing with the advantage of the wind, the Eagles controlled much of the play and generated numerous inside-50 entries but failed to fully capitalize on the scoreboard. Despite dominating possession and territory, several missed opportunities kept Grand River within striking distance.
“We probably left a few goals out there,” said midfielder Sean Fahey. “But the positive was we were getting our hands on the footy and creating chances consistently.”
The Eagles responded strongly after halftime. Their midfield continued to gain control around stoppages while the defence held firm whenever Grand River threatened to generate momentum. With every player contributing and no rotation relief available, the team’s fitness and commitment became increasingly evident.
By the final quarter, the Eagles were clearly playing the game on their terms. Their pressure remained high, the ball movement became cleaner, and the forward line began converting opportunities more effectively. The result was a strong finishing term that sealed a deserved victory.
“We’ve still got a lot of guys learning about each other’s games,” said Kevin Minaker. “To get a win like that with only 16 players shows the character of this group.”
Looking Forward
The Eagles now turn their attention to Round 3, where they will once again hit the road for a challenging trip to the nation’s capital to take on the Ottawa Swans.
Ottawa has traditionally been one of the stronger clubs in AFL Ontario, and travelling away always presents a unique challenge. However, there are plenty of positives for the Eagles to take into next week’s contest.
The midfield combination of Fahey, Barsic, Karagiannis, and Illich showed promising signs against Grand River and will continue to develop with more game time together. Up forward, the chemistry between Maher, Minaker, and Falcioni is beginning to emerge, creating multiple scoring options for the side.
Defensively, the Eagles demonstrated they can withstand pressure and remain composed, while the commitment shown by the entire group to run out four quarters with just 16 players highlights the fitness and determination within the squad.
Perhaps the most exciting aspect is that this group is still getting to know each other. With new faces continuing to settle into the team and connections improving each week, there remains significant upside in the way the Eagles can play.
If the Eagles can clean up their finishing inside 50 and take better advantage of their periods of dominance, they will head into Ottawa with genuine belief that they can challenge one of the competition’s benchmark sides.
Round 2 provided evidence that this Eagles squad has both depth of character and plenty of room for growth. As the season begins to take shape, the road trip to Ottawa presents another opportunity to build momentum, strengthen team chemistry, and continue establishing the foundations for a successful 2026 campaign.
